Middle school students study Spanish for all three years. Basic vocabulary, conversational skills, and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries are introduced in the sixth grade. A variety of activities, such as songs, computer-based activities, games, and kinesthetic activities, are incorporated into instruction to accommodate different learning styles. Students build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing from year to year. Eighth grade students are prepared for and enthusiastic about studying a second language in the upper school.
The highlight of eighth grade study is a one-week language immersion trip to Costa Rica. Students attend intensive Spanish classes each morning and go on field trips to cultural and natural sites in the afternoon. It is an experience they never forget.
