TRAVEL
AT MMFS

The world is our classroom: Around the corner. Around the city. Around the globe.
Learning beyond borders.
MMFS is known for making travel one of the foundations of its program for students with learning disabilities. It’s part of our mission and our curriculum. MMFS students discover different cultures, fresh perspectives, and a little extra brilliance within themselves.
TRAVEL AT THE LOWER SCHOOL
Learning outside the classroom.
Lower school classes go on adventures in the neighborhood and across NYC. Some trips complement the curriculum and some are just for community building—and fun!

Students have visited Ellis Island, the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan, the Museum of the City of New York, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Salt Marsh Nature Center, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Stonewall Inn, to name just a few destinations.

Twice a year the entire lower school community heads to Prospect Park for Field Day, and goes on fun outings like bowling and ice skating.
TRAVEL AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Bringing the curriculum to life.
¡Hola Costa Rica! The 8th grade language-immersion trip to Costa Rica is a highlight of the middle school experience. Students attend intensive Spanish language classes each morning and go on field trips to cultural and natural sites each afternoon. In keeping with the Quaker value of social responsibility, our students also participate in a service project.

We also take advantage of the rich resources of New York City, with trips to the American Museum of Natural History, the Whitney Museum, the Banksy Museum, Arthur Avenue, or to see a Broadway show.

7th graders also take a daytrip to Philadelphia to complement their study of US history.
TRAVEL AT THE UPPER SCHOOL
Passport required.
International travel is a powerful experience for students with learning disabilities, helping them gain a global perspective and greater confidence in their ability to navigate the world.

A weeklong trip to Europe is part of the 10th grade curriculum; students study art, history, and culture, with an emphasis on resistance movements during the Holocaust. Every other year, 11th and 12th grade students have the opportunity to go abroad during spring break. Destinations have included South Africa, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan, and Italy.

Upperclass students taking a Modern Languages class may have an opportunity to attend a language immersion trip to either Puerto Rico (Spanish) or Washington DC (ASL).
COMMUNITY-BUILDING TRIPS
Adventures that bring students together outside the school building.
MMFS students take part in off-campus adventures that build community, foster independence, and create lasting memories. These trips are a chance to explore nature, connect with peers and teachers, and grow together—outside the school walls.

LOWER SCHOOL COMMUNITY TRIP

Fairview Lake
The oldest lower school students go for a three-day adventure to the Fairview Lake YMCA camp in New Jersey. This trip builds community and independence, as students and teachers enjoy the outdoors and each other outside the classroom and the city. They learn about nature, develop outdoor skills, and have fun!

MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY TRIP

Outdoor Classroom
6th and 7th graders go to Outdoor Classroom (formerly Nature’s Classroom) in Connecticut for three days of outdoor education and adventures in the woods. There are communal meals with job assignments, group activities, time to relax and play, and opportunities for learning and leadership. No cell phones allowed!

UPPER SCHOOL COMMUNITY TRIP

Iroquois Springs
Every school year begins with a chance for students and faculty to come together as a community outside the demands of academic life. Many years it’s a three-day retreat to Iroquois Springs in the Catskills, where memories and friendships are made. Students and faculty enjoy canoeing, ropes courses, campfires, and a talent show. There’s time for reconnecting with old friends, making new ones, and having conversations about leadership, learning disabilities, and Quakerism.
